ESSUS events are held every two years. The 1st European Symposium on Substance Use among Students was organised and hosted by the University of Antwerp in 2008, with the second event held at Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice in 2010. The third symposium was held at the University of Bradford in the UK in June 2012. The venue of the 4th European Symposium on Substance Use among Students was the Leibniz-Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS in Bremen, Germany, on the 26th and 27th of June 2014
The fifth European Symposium on Substance Use among Students has been hosted by The INSERM Unit 1073, Rouen School of Medicine at the University of Rouen and the Epidemiology and Health Promotion Department of the Rouen University Hospital, in Rouen, France on 30th June and 1st July 2016.
The 6th ESSUS conference was held at the University of Amsterdam from the 21st -22rd of June 2018. The theme of this sixth ESSUS conference of the ESSUS Network was “Health (risk) behavior of university students in times of performance pressure: Towards practical solutions” and was organized and hosted by the Student Health Service of the University of Amsterdam.
