The idea for a symposium series on substance use in student populations originated from a workshop on the topic at the 2007 EUPHA conference. As discussed at the workshop attending university or college often coincides with a transitional period from adolescence into adulthood, and also often the first experience of living independently from direct parental supervision. Alcohol and drug consumption at this time may have a number of negative consequences and could contribute to later life trajectories of harmful substance use. However whilst there are challenges there are also unique opportunities for interventions with this population and, as highlighted in the most recent event, possibilities to engage with students in a positive and productive way.
